The Avro Vulcan was the last V Bomber to see active service in its primary role during the Falklands conflict. It is the most popular of the three and one aircraft has recently become airborne again after a long period of rejuvenation. It has always been a major attraction at air shows throughout the world, attracting crowds who delight in its unique delta-wing shape and amazing manoeuvrability.

The book examines the origins of the design, the prototypes and experimental aircraft and goes on to explain the modifications that were made to the last of the breed.

The author David Fildes, had access to many previously unpublished photographs and experimental design plans. This is because he was a leading member of the Avro Heritage Centre at Woodford now known has the Avro Heritage Museum and discovered a great deal of unpublished material in their archives.

Overall I’d say that this book is of great value for anyone interested in the process of aircraft design.

Indy-Amps

A handbook really for those people that want to build a bomber (a civil version of course) and it is amazing how much information the author was able to collect. It is a handbook of the Avro Vulcan with 487 pages full of technicalities and facts and at the end you sure are a Vulcan expert.

A very well documented book of the highest quality in content and execution.

Now I know the Vulcan isn't exactly short of titles covering its history and service life so I did wonder if this new book would break any new ground and I'm pleased to say it's a rather impressive piece of work. It's a weighty bit of kit at 487 pages and looks chock full of information but the wealth of diagrams and schematic drawings are what first caught my eye and there's lots of them! The author has started right from the beginning here with a brief history of Avro itself, the original government specification B35/46 including some fascinating tender drawings and concept models, the competitions offerings for tender, the Avro 707, development and production etc etc right through to weapons, tactics and then on even further to service life up to the display flights and its final years of service. There's just so much in this book it's crazy, very very impressive indeed and it certainly stands out on its own, the details on weapon systems alone will have me cross referencing with Chris Gibson's 'Vulcans Hammer' for a while but what a fantastic book this is, I've not been so furnished with a wealth of information like this since my last Tony Blackman book on the jet. A very thorough and comprehensive title this one which will please established fans and first time readers of the subject alike. A very sensible investment of £20 if ever there was one!

Aviation Enthusiast Book Club

A marvellous compendium of the evolution and chronology of the Vulcan, from the original specification through every bit of kit on board to specialist advice for model makers. It is a tremendous book for dipping into and for finding yet another serendipitous piece of fascinating information. You will not find a better Vulcan book.

RAF Historical Society Journal

A marvellous compendium. It is a tremendous book for dipping into and for finding yet another serendipitous piece of fascinating information.

Royal Aeronautical Society Journal

David Fildes was involved in Avro's Public Relations from 1972 and has obviously dug deeply into the genesis and development of the Vulcan and its numerous offshoots and projects. In 487 pages, there are hundreds of photographs and drawings. This is an important record of a vital unit of the Royal Air Force's armoury during the dangerous period of the Cold War when prevention of war lay in the ability to provide massive retaliation.

Aeromilitaria

In this new title you get to read about all the various aspects that lead to the design of the Vulcan, as well as all the various changes and upgrades that were made to the design throughout its career. This is a very good title.. certainly one to add to your library if you are interested in the type.

Model Airplane International

As a child David Fildes was taken to Woodford aerodrome by his parents, where he witnessed an early test flight of a Vulcan bomber that made a lasting impression. Now more than five decades later, the 61-year-old has published a book on the aircraft.

Stockport Express

An icon of the Cold War era, the Vulcan continues to capture the public imagination and is always a major attraction at airshows. The unique, innovative delta wing aircraft was built to meet a Ministry of Supply specification for a medium range bomber that could carry a 10,000lb bomb with a target range of 1,500 nautical miles. This book features many previously unpublished photographs, most of them taken by the Avro photographic department.
