Hitler's decision to invade Poland in August 1939 triggered the start of the Second World War. It was also the first demonstration of Blitzkrieg tactics - the ruthless use of armour, mobile infantry and air support. The brave Polish army, inadequately equipped and inferior in numbers, was overwhelmed by this awesome display of military power as well as being taken by surprise. Official German photographers accompanied the triumphant Nazi forces on their victorious advance which first seized the key part of Danzig and then Warsaw, all within one month.rn rnThe Crushing of Poland captures the drama and raw aggression of the Campaign in photographs and full captions.

As with all of the Images of War series by Pen & Sword you will find a treasure trove of images to study. The selection of photos for this publication is good with many that I personally had not seen until now. For the most part the captioning is spot on but there are a couple of slips ups, but minor ones. The order of events that took place at the start of the Polish campaign have been described by the author very well right through to the capitulation. This is fairly basic though perhaps and if you are looking for more detailed information then another book will be needed. There may be the odd image that is of lesser quality but the author does make mention of these photos not being retouched at the beginning of the book which will explain this.

There is a bit of everything here for the modeller except for aircraft. The author does mention them in his text and how they played a role in the invasion of Poland yet there are none to be found in the photographs presented here. So as long as the modeller isn't looking for aircraft photos he should be quite happy with what there is here.

I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone looking for reference material.
