Until now there has not been a serious study of the rifle-armed regiments of the British Army that earned such renown in the Peninsular and Waterloo campaigns. Compiled by a former rifleman, Ray Cusick, who has written extensively on the subject, Wellington's Rifles examines the new rifle regiments, how they came about, their development and their actions.

The author also investigates the introduction of rifled muskets into the British Army in the French and Indian wars of the eighteenth century, where they were shunned by the military establishment, to their transition into a key element in Wellington's extraordinarily successful Peninsular army.

The training and tactics of the riflemen are explained and each significant engagement in which they were involved is explored in thrilling detail. It was the riflemen of the 95th Regiment that inspired the series of Sharpe books and films. That was the fiction; this is the reality.

The publication will be introduced by the renowned Napoleonic historian Ian Fletcher.

I would have to say this is a book for those more interested in the evolution of the British rifle regiments before 1808, or a beginner seeking an entry point into the history of the rifles. Those wanting greater depth of coverage for the services of the rifle regiments in the period 1808-1815 could then consult Verner (95th), Beamish (KGL) or Rigaud (5/60th) for a more detailed history. However for the period from 1758 to 1808, this book is an important addition.

The Napoleon Series - January 2014 - reviewed by Steve Brown

Ray Cusick's postumously published book, while incomplete and thus not the best written book you'll read, is full of gems of useful information, interesting anecdotes and so well worth a read. The book deals primarily with the historical background to the creation of light infantry in the British army, including the adoption of the rifled musket, the formation of the experimental corps of riflemen and the early history of the 95th Regiment.

The late Ray Cusick's fascinating book explains the development of the rifle and the early use of what today would be considered standard infantry tactics. This is no dull academic study. The great battles of these eras are brought to life. Wellington's Rifles is therefore both enlightening and entertaining.
