Here is something to please both the dedicated Land Rover/Range Rover enthusiast as well as those who enjoy a cracking tale of ‘derring do’. Published with the benefit of half a century of hindsight, this well illustrated volume tells the story of the epic 17,084 mile, six month long British Trans-Americas Expedition which set out to complete the first road vehicle journey the length of the Pan American Highway from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego. Others had tried but failed, progress grinding to halt in the dense Darien jungle of Panama, the infamous 200 mile wide ‘Darien Gap’. The 1971/72 expedition consisted of a British Army team with the full support of British Leyland’s Rover division, who saw the project as a way of promoting their new Range Rover. Although the team completed their challenge, it’s the three months that they spent cutting their way through the Darien jungle that really defined the expedition. Hopes that the project would lead to the completion of the Pan-American.. Read more

This 3rd volume looks at the Series III of the Land Rover covering 1971-1985 after which it was replaced by the long-lived Land Rover Defender.
It follows the same format as the previous two volumes, with good photos of this version as well as the various conversions and special duty versions.
Once again, a useful reference to a very prevalent classic vehicle in Britain especially. Anyone modelling the 1950s to the 1980s will certainly find these 3 volumes of interest.
Recommended.

Volume 2 of the Classic Vehicles series on the Land Rover looks at the Series II and IIA models. Once again the author starts with the development of the second generation of the classic Land Rover.
This volume covers 1958-1971 and is also filled with photos of the series II Land Rovers and the many variations and conversions carried out on these vehicles over the period covered. Another useful reference addition.

Discovering Lost Automobiles and their Stories by Michael Ware is such a fun read. I learned so much about both the "found" cars and the people who owned them. I think most people have a certain attraction to finding hidden gems, whether automobiles or other collectibles (for me it is probably books, record albums, and sports cards). Seeing how so many vehicles came to be uncovered, as well as the stories about how they ended up "lost," makes for fascinating reading. I can't imagine having a car and just letting it sit in less-than-ideal conditions for years. But then I have never owned more than three cars at one time and had a purpose for each, so my income bracket probably plays into my ability to understand. Even with all of the amazing vehicles mentioned here the one that caused me to go and look up more pictures as well as more of the backstory was the Manta Ray Concept Car, built on a Studebaker frame by a couple of engineers and a true one of a kind, as in there is only one. It.. Read more
