The Junkers Ju 87 ‘Stuka’ (a contraction of the German word Sturzkampfflugzeug, ie dive bomber) was arguably the Luftwaffe’s most recognisable aeroplane, with its inverted gull wings and fixed spatted undercarriage.

Designed by Hermann Pohlmann as a dedicated dive bomber and ground-attack aircraft, the prototype first flew in 1935, and made its combat debut in 1937 with the Luftwaffe's Condor Legion during the Spanish Civil War. After several design changes in the light of operational experiences, the ‘Stuka’ went on to serve the Luftwaffe and Axis forces, from the invasion of Poland in 1939, through the Battles of France and Britain in 1940, over the North African desert and the across Mediterranean, the invasion of Russia and the subsequent bitter fighting in that vast area, and following several more design changes and upgrades, continued to serve through to the end of World War Two.

This latest addition to the growing Flight Craft range, follows the previous well established format, in that it is split in to three main sections. The first section, after offering a concise design and development history, continues with coverage of the various sub-types, from ‘Anton’ to ‘Gustav’ and their operational use from the Spanish Civil War to the end of World War Two.

This is followed by a 16-page full colour illustration section featuring detailed profiles and 2-views of the colour schemes and markings carried by the type in Luftwaffe and Axis service. The final section lists as many of the injection-moulded plastic model kits produced of the Junkers Ju 87 in all the major scales that the authors could find details of, including the brand new Airfix 1/72 and 1/48 scale kits which were released while this book was being written, with photos of many finished models made by some of the world’s best modellers.

As with all the other books in the Flight Craft range, whilst published primarily with the scale aircraft modeller in mind, it is hoped that those readers who might perhaps describe themselves as 'occasional' modellers, or even simply aviation enthusiasts, may also find that this colourful and informative work offers something to provoke their interests too.

If you want to immerse yourself in the building of a particular model aircraft, a book from the “Flight Craft” series could make the perfect companion for your project. Like all numbers in the series, this one covers its subject — the legendary Stuka dive bomber — on three levels. First, authors Martin Derry and Neil Robinson narrate the design, development and deployment of the machine, from the drawing board in the ’30s through its brutal testing ground in the Spanish Civil War, on to the glory days of Blitzkrieg, and finally into the Stuka’s twilight when its dwindling numbers became ever more vulnerable. Next, readers are treated to numerous beautifully rendered illustrations of paint schemes and unit markings to complement the generous raft of detailed photographs. And finally, the book offers a survey and analysis of pretty much all the Stuka kits that are or ever have been available, featuring images of professional-grade finished models as examples. Whether you plan to actually build a Stuka of your own or not, this informative, visually stimulating guide to the aircraft will be appreciated by any aircraft enthusiast.

Flightpath - reviewed by Neil Page

Martin Derry and Neil Robinson’s tome on the Junkers Ju 87 Stuka is a welcome addition to the Stuka library at good price point. Martin and Neil provide an easy read on the Stuka’s development and service history. I particularly enjoyed the section of foreign operated Stukas with details I had not seen before. Mark Rolfe also includes six color profiles of some of these aircraft if you wish to model outside of the Luftwaffe. All of the development and service photographs are well-captioned providing additional insight and details. The Mark Rolfe color profiles are supported with clear, detailed captions that make this a great reference for some interesting modeling. The added bonus is the review of all the kits available on the Stuka, including the latest Airfix 1/48 Ju 87 kits.

My thanks to Pen and Sword, Casemate, and IPMS/USA for the chance to review this great book.

Highly recommended!

IPMS/USA Reviews

The latest title in Pen and Sword’s ‘Flightcraft’ series of monographs is devoted to arguably one of the most iconic individual Luftwaffe aircraft types of WWII - the Ju 87 Stuka. Designed primarily as a ‘one-stop’ visual reference for modellers, this 96-page large-format card-covered soft back comprises three main sections; the book opens with a concise history of the type from the combat debut in 1937 of the Anton variant in the Spanish Civil War to spearhead of Blitzkrieg in Poland and the West through to Barbarossa and the later Dora and Gustav variants deployed as tank-killers at Kursk and during the years of defeat and retreat. Subsequent chapters cover foreign operators and camouflage and markings which serve as an introduction to sixteen pages of very competent profile and plan-view artwork by Mark Rolfe illustrating the huge range of colour schemes worn by the Stuka

For modellers this is another fine guide as well as providing the historical background to accompany the model details. Even the 'occasional' modeller will find plenty to interest and inspire them here, and in a book which provides just a good concise history of the Skuka for the aviation historian. I like it.
