This publication will be the first full catalogue of Glasgow Museums’ internationally important collection of ship models.

Almost all of the 676 models, which range from elegant cruise liners to humble Clyde puffers, and from simple half-hull design models to magnificent display models, were produced by Clyde shipyards or Glasgow-based ship owners. It is the representation of models from such a distinct geographical area, together with the quality of the models, which makes this collection so exceptional. As well as general chapters about the collection, each of the 676 models has a description and colour photograph.

Some of the most famous ships launched on the Clyde are represented, such as RMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Hood, as well models of historically significant vessels such as the first European passenger steamer Comet and the world’s first commercial turbine-powered vessel King Edward. The ship models form one of Glasgow Museums most popular and most viewed collections, and enquiries about them come in from all over the world.

A stunning collection of photographs will complement newly researched and in-depth chapters. The book will give readers worldwide a chance to see images of the models, a sense of the breadth and importance of the collection and a deepened understanding about the whole history of the ship.

"This is a well put together book backed up with good photographs and I would highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in this area"

Shipping Today and Yesterday Feb 2022

For those interested in ships and ship models this hugely impressive book offers the prospect of many hours spent happily dipping into what must be one of the finest collections of ship models in the UK. The book also brings the entire collection together, as in reality it is split between the Riverside Museum itself on the banks of the Clyde and the museum’s resource centre located elsewhere in the city. The authors and Seaforth are to be congratulated for such a carefully thought-out and well produced book. It is lavishly illustrated and well designed, with the high production values we generally associate with this publisher.

Warship Annual 2021 Edition

'I love the book. The book itself is a work of art …’

Eric Ruff, Curator Emeritus, Yarmouth County Museum, Nova Scotia, 2020

‘Glasgow Museums’ vast collection of model ships has fascinated visitors of all generations, and safeguarded mementos of the glory days of Clyde shipbuilding.’

Sunday Post, 2019

‘I am surprised they managed to produce such an excellent volume of this size for so little.’

Ships of Scale

‘The Ship Models is more than just a listing of models with photographs of every one … the collection as a whole is an important international resource for the study of shipbuilding as well as being a delight for generations of model-makers and collectors.’

Australian Naval Institute

'The superb photography and design of the book is immediately striking and allows readers to appreciate the extraordinary depth and quality of this internationally important collection.’

Prof. John R Hume, OBE, BSc ARCST, Hon FRIAS, FSA Scot 2019

‘This is an ideal ship model catalogue and deserves a wide audience and a place in many public and private libraries. It is thoughtful, comprehensive, colourful, well presented, useful, and beautiful. … This beautiful and important book is a testimonial to the ‘depth of care and feeling that ships and boats have inspired over generations,’ as the foreword by John R. Hume notes. If you share that feeling for ship models, this is the book for you.’

Sea History, spring 2021 (journal of the National Maritime Historical Society)

‘… this history and catalogue is exemplary. It has been produced to an extremely high standard; the quality of reproduction does justice to the subject … looking ahead, this book might actually set a standard for future catalogues of other ship model collections in the UK.’

The Mariner’s Mirror, published by the Society for Nautical Research and a leading international journal of naval and maritime history

A marvel for the senses without a doubt.

Miniaturas JM

This is a beautiful volume that deserves a place in the library of anyone interested in the use of models as essential functional elements in the history of shipbuilding.

The Northern Mariner/Le marin du nord, (Vol. XXIX, No. 4, Fall 2019)

A wide range of notes and a detailed analytical index conclude a first-rate work which, by right, places itself in a prominent position both among the texts of naval history and among those of history of naval art.

Absolutely not to be missed.

STORIA militare, April 2020

The book is beautifully illustrated showing the most intricate detailing on the most lavish of these models. A fantastic book for modellers and ship enthusiasts alike.

Highly recommended.

World of Warships, April 2020 - reviewed by Charles Waters

Military Model Scene, Robin Buckland

With over 800 illustrations this outstanding book fully interprets the entire collection for the first time, the result of over a decade of new research, photography and conservation work.

Model Boats, January 2020 – reviewed by John Deamer

I opened a few pages at random. And was transfixed! This book is glorious! Back to page one, read a few pages, then worked through every one of the 373 pages.

The photographs of the models are beautiful and expert. Most are laterals, but some are of smaller details. There are many historical photographs, pictures of modelers in action, previous exhibitions. To describe the pictures as “lavish” would be an understatement.

Wow... What an incredible book!

If you love ship models, which to me encapsulate so many things, from the strange but compelling desire we have to make miniature representations of our inventions, to the almost fairytale romance and sublime/terrifying awe of our relationships with the elemental seas, this is an essential publication. Beautifully produced, an honourable homage to the vast expenditure of skill and passion that the objects it depicts represents. Awesome is a much overused and devalued term nowadays. But it really does fit the bill here.

A Question Of Scale, Seb Palmer

This superbly produced publication is the first full catalogue of Glasgow Museums’ internationally important collection of ship models. Almost all of the 676 models, which range from elegant cruise liners to humble Clyde puffers, and from simple half-hull design models to magnificent display models, were produced by Clyde shipyards or Glasgow-based ship owners. As well as informative general chapters about the collection, a colour photograph of each of the 676 models is included, along with their salient features. Models of famous ships built on the Clyde include RMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Hood, as well as historically significant vessels such as the very first passenger steamer Comet and the world’s first commercial turbine-powered vessel King Edward. I’ve not yet had the pleasure of visiting Glasgow’s museums but this book has certainly whetted my appetite to do so.
