In 1958 one of Britain`s greatest locomotive designers died without public fanfare or recognition, mourned only by his family. Yet William Stanier, arguably one of our greatest engineers and his leader, said of him that without his Chief Draughtsman all he achieved with the LMS would not have been possible. How could such a man slip from our view and remain anonymous, although his Princess Coronations, Black 5s and 8Fs are regarded as three of the finest classes of locomotive ever built? And today many survive as stars to grace the ever growing preservation movement.

In reality, Tom Coleman was an intensely private and modest man who never sought recognition or commendation. His need for privacy may be one reason why his life has remained shrouded in mystery for so long, but finally his story has been slowly pieced together from a wide variety of sources, many previously untapped. So now we can see for ourselves his great contribution to railway history and recognise his singular talents.

This excellent book gives this talented designer the attention he deserves and gives some account of the family life that is all too often overlooked in railway biographies. It is supplemented by biographies of other locomotive draughtsmen and engineers plus a useful appendix of locomotive drawings showing how Tom's designs evolved. Definitely a book to be recommended.

Model Engineer, 31st January - 13th February 2020 – reviewed by Roger Backhouse

The book includes some interesting line drawings and many images both monochrome and colour. There is a comprehensive index and, especially valuable, a number of pages providing brief biographies of key LMS senior personnel.

Friends of the National Railway Museum

This high quality publication has a huge collection of photographs of the various LMS classes - being constructed, on shed and at various locations, plus build diagrams and statistics. It's a veritable 'everything you ever wanted to know' about the locomotives of the LMS, combined with a biography of a modest man who rose through the ranks of loco design to become Stanier's most senior draughtsman, close associate and respected friend. Superb production and layout.

Friends of the West Highland Lines

An interesting story about the work of a genius who should not be forgotten

About Tim Hillier-Graves

TIM HILLIER-GRAVES was born in North London during 1951. On leaving university he served as an officer with the Royal Navy, seeing wide service on land and sea. For much of this time he specialised in weapon development projects, specifically missiles and heavyweight torpedoes, and worked alongside BAe, Marconi Space and Defence Systems and McDonnell Douglas in the process. In support of this work, he undertook prolonged periods of study and research at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich, and the Royal Military College of Science, Shrivenham. Late in his career he changed specialisms to become Head of Investigations for the MoD’s Estates Organisation. From this he moved on to become Head of Finance and Planning and then into Human Resource Management where he specialised in outsourcing to industry. Then as an Assistant Director he took on responsibility of housing for military personnel. He retired in 2011 to focus more fully on writing biographies and books related to military, aviation and engineering matters.
