Rating: 5 out of 5 stars I was fascinated reading the author's presentation of both the primary historical sources on the Norman incursions into England and events of the period which have been muddled or partially lost to the passage of time. The author begins with a helpful recap of the undisputed events of the period, and on to the salient battles (Fulford, Stamford Bridge, and finally Hastings). He also examines the composition of the warring forces, their technology, and the relevant physical terrain, then and now. It's annotated well throughout, and the chapter notes and bibliography will give rich scope for further reading for keen students of the period. Probably the highlight for me was the author's riveting (really!) discussion of the Bayeux Tapestry and its inception and known history. I'm a keen embroiderer (it's not a tapestry, as most people know by now) and reading about the work and the history and disposition of the piece, as well as the missing/lost panel of William's.. This goes far beyond what the title suggests, offering detailed analysis of marriage, contraception, abortion and much more. Offering case studies of individual experiences brings such depth to this book, too. It’s very well written and will appeal to many readers, including those who may balk at non-fiction.

From the way they talk, to the things they sued over an even the wages people got it seems like everything was so different in the 14th century in London. There were lawsuits over people blocking the light into their homes and even contracts that state it is unlawful to do so people were hung for stealing clothing and murdered for defending a woman. I love historical nonfiction in this book on London and the people in the 14th century was so interesting. I just know I will read it again and can’t wait to share it with my husband. The summary I gave isn’t it all in a nutshell there is much much more and all compelling it will make you shake your head in disbelief. What more can I say this book is very interesting and I highly recommend it to any history fan especially if like me you love British history.

I love history and was so excited to read this book because I know next to nothing about English history, especially the time frame this book covers. I learned so much from this book and was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the author's writing style. It wasn't boring or dry, which was a huge relief because many historical books can be very dry. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to read more titles by this author.
