Throughout their history, the Romans were troubled by formidable warlike tribes along their northern borders. The Celts of Gaul and Northern Italy, who sacked Rome itself, the British who repulsed Julius Caesar and resisted later occupation, the Germanic tribes along the Rhine and the fearsome falx-wielding Dacians on the Danube, all proved worthy foes of the legions. If you are raising your own army to defy the might of Rome, Andy Singleton will help you get them ready for battle with ease.

The emphasis is on achievable results and practical advice to get your army painted and ready for gaming in a reasonable time frame, and achieve a fine collection that will look great on the shelf or table. Most of the figures featured in the numerous illustrations are 28mm but the techniques described are easily adaptable to smaller scales and to plastic or metal. Step-by-step guidance takes the process from initial preparation and assembly of the figure, to finishing and basing. Themed chapters cover armour, clothing, skin tones, warpaint and tattoos, shields and horses.

A well explained series of topics, with detail of the materials and colours used for each element and all clearly explained. The author is a professional figure painter and his experience shows through very well. As a fan of the Victrix range of 28mm plastic figures, a number of which are featured in the book, this is a really useful addition to the series. Plenty to learn from this one I think.

Military Model Scene, Robin Buckland

The book is another little pearl from Andy Singleton who this time chooses to treat all the Nordic peoples who were enemies of Rome. Each small section containing the tips for painting contains data that can be easily followed and which give the type of brush and the color used (Vallejo). The model maker and the enthusiast is guided step by step by Singleton's expertise which produces another great book very useful for those who want to create fantastic and realistic wargames and excellent small size dioramas!

On The Old Barbed Wire

This is a great book for anyone that is starting ancients period wargaming and needs help to get going with painting figures. This is the bit I struggle with big time, but this book is giving me the confidence to give it another go.

Medieval Sword School

It is a real pleasure to review one of Andy Singleton’s books and this one does not disappoint. Again, he explains patiently (for those of us of inferior talent) the best approach to technical preparation and painting of our barbarians. The chapters on basing and horse painting are invaluable for any historical time period. Highly recommended.
