The history of the Fabii Maximii is in many ways that of the Roman Republic. In the legends and historical scraps that survived the Republic, the members of the Fabius clan were, more often than not, the hammers that forged the empire. Few families contributed more to the survival and success of the Republic and for so many centuries. Few could boast such great glories; perhaps none could match the record of Fabian offices and honours in the Republic. Though the bloodline sank into obscurity in the early empire, the name still carried memories of great achievements past.
A historical detective work, this book explores the facts and fables of the Republic’s most distinguished family. Chapters investigate not only the lives and careers of the Fabii Maximi, but the critical military and political contexts of their days. As a result, readers get not only the story of the Roman Republic’s rise and domination of an empire, but a closer look at a family of Romans who made it possible.

This is a nice approach to the history of the Roman Republic, and one that the Fabii would probably have appreciated, reflecting the obsession with family achievements amongst the senior members of the Roman aristocracy.

I am truly grateful to have stumbled upon this work... It is no small feat to perform such as an in-depth historical investigation to an ancient Roman family that ceded into the obscurity of time. Nevertheless, McCall has produced a high quality work that illustrates the undeniable importance of the gens Fabia. His work should encourage other writers to carry out studies of less prominent individuals and families. The eventual amalgamation of these works should collectively improve our holistic understanding of ancient Rome.

The book provides a huge number of resources in the appendix on Republic sources of information. This goes on to share online translation of republic historical sources. Again I am amazed at howe much of this stuff survives. You see the ruins of Rome but I don’t think about all the documents that are still knocking around.
Medieval Sword School, Jason Hulott
If anyone is interested in this period then this book is a useful addition to your bookshelf. It is a very interesting and slightly different look at Hannibal’s invasion and other wars such as the Spanish and Gallic wars.

He teaches high school history--his calling--at Cincinnati Country Day School in Ohio and is a pioneering advocate of the use of video games as a means for learning history.
