Nearly 80 years on, the concept and scale of the Nazis’ genocide programme remains an indelible, nay almost unbelievable, stain on the human race. Yet it was a dreadful reality of which, as this graphic book demonstrates, all too much proof exists.

Between 1941 and 1945 an estimated three and a half million Jews and an unknown number of others, including Soviet POWs and gypsies, perished in six camps built in Poland; Auschwitz-Birkenau, Belzec, Chelmno, Majdenak, Sobibor and Treblinka.

Unpleasant as it may be, it does no harm for present generations to be reminded of man’s inhumanity to man, if only to ensure such atrocities will never be repeated.

This book aims to do just this by tracing the history of the so called Final Solution and the building and operation of the Operation Reinhard camps built for the sole purpose of mass murder and genocide.

Ian Baxter has compiled a book of rare photographs from Occupied Poland which features the Nazi German Death Camps. Eighty years on, the concept and scale of the German genocide programme remains a stain on humanity. This book graphically demonstrates the depths and the reality of the Holocaust, the proof exists, whatever the deniers try and tell you.

A thought provoking, if somewhat frightening record of what human beings can do to others. Please God, or whatever your belief, this should never happen again, and however horrifying, something I think does need to be faced up to.

The thing about the photos is that in one photo you can see a group of men and children being boarded on a train to certain death and in the next photo you have a group of German officers such as Arthur Dachsel laughing and joking and playing musical instruments. It all adds to the sinister feeling of if only these horrible scenes could be seen happening and then prevented. Moving the subject aside slightly this book fits in well with the Images of War Series in that it is full of photos and all of high quality, the text and supporting evidence is of the usual high quality and so well informed. Which should be the case as the author Ian Baxter is a leading historian on this subject. Would I recommend this book? Of course I would this book is a great addition to this series of which every book is of very high quality and interest. Also if you are under 25, read this book and others as these books are important and everyone needs to learn about this subject.
