1918 was a watershed moment for the development of British democracy: for the first time, some women could vote. The occasion marked the culmination of a fifty-year long and arduous struggle of thousands of women and men up and down the country.

Using unique documents and images held at The National Archives, we will delve into the world of suffrage and trace the journey of these thousands of individuals, fighting to achieve women’s rights in a man’s world, and how they were ultimately able to emerge largely victorious.

A quick and informative read, this is a great little book of photography for fans of women’s history.

The Lazy Historian

Overall, this is a very good primer for those wishing to learn more about the suffragettes.

David Wood, Kent Family History Society, 2019

It is extremely well put together, with just the right amount of text to put the images into context. I learned a lot about the women who changed the face of British politics for ever.

This is one of the types of books this publisher excels at. Experts on a topic with good access to images and visual resources create an informative and compelling narrative of a historically important subject or event, combining easy to read accounts with pictures and documents relevant to the matter that help make it more vivid and memorable in our minds.

This book is an absolute delight, the images and scans are so amazing and it’s really wonderful to be able to see and examine them. The information provided is also fascinating, and easily accessible to any level of history buff. It has proven a perfect companion to read during my covering of the Suffragettes at university, and like many books I’ve read from Pen and Sword, it’s possible I’ll use it in my work as a source as it has some great primary source material hidden in the images and scans.

I’d definitely urge you to pick up this book.

This book provides images and a basic narrative of events leading up to partial suffrage in 1918. It would be a useful resource for students and schools teaching the period in history, giving examples of police documents, as well as images of the women involved in the suffrage fight and the events they took part in.

I found this book interesting and the use of narrative and images side by side helped put this into perspective. I read this book in one sitting, though it is only 92 pages long.

Absolutely wonderful and if you are after something different in regards the suffragette movement, you'll love this.
