What is the purpose of navies in the modern world, and what types of warship does this require? This book tackles these questions by looking at naval developments, both technological and operational, in the quarter century since the end of the Cold War. It provides the overall political and economic context, assesses significant naval operations from the first Gulf War to Russia’s annexation of Crimea, reviews changes in the objectives and composition of the principal fleets, describes major design developments amongst the main warship types, and examines wider technological and operational developments, including naval aviation, shipbuilding and manning.

It follows the successful approach and format of Seaforth’s annual World Naval Review, with individual sections by internationally acknowledged experts, and is heavily illustrated in a similar style. As a succinct, single-volume overview of how contemporary navies have evolved to meet today’s challenges it is unrivalled, and will prove invaluable to defence professionals and interested enthusiasts alike.

Provides a most useful contextual analysis of the post-Cold War period, explaining how technological developments and a range of world events have variously shaped the fleets of today.

A contemporary compendium of the world’s navies will prove a valuable reference to modelers whose Jane’s volumes may well be outdated.

An excellent overview on a cutting edge topic.

ModellWerft, April 2017 - reviewed by Oliver Bothmann

A reasonable number of photographs, drawings and plans accompany the work, 176 in black and white and 81 in color.

An interesting book and of rabiosa actuality.

José Manuél Rico Cortés (Mister JM) - Miniaturas JM

This is a book compiled by many experts in their field, some of whom I am acquainted with, or have worked with, over the years, and edited by a well know US editor and author of naval and maritime publications. With such a good pedigree I looked forward to reading about how the naval profession was progressing in the 21st Century.

I was not disappointed. This book is a wealth of information and analysis, which is easy to read, lucid and well presented.

Miniature Wargames, March 2017 – reviewed by Martin Pike

A useful work that will introduce the subject to beginners and inform even the expert

Navy News - reviewed by Eric Grove

As a single-volume overview of how contemporary navies have evolved to meet today's challenges it is unrivalled. For anyone interested in modern navies and warships, from defence professionals to enthusiasts, this volume is a must.

Ships Monthly, February 2017 - reviewed by Nicolas Leach

This well-illustrated book’s strength lies in its bold move to set all these and other major developments (the advance of Air-Independent Propulsion attack submarines, the continued blurring between surface escorts and high-end Offshore Patrol Vessels) into a coherent strategic picture. The diversity and independence of the contributors allows this book to present a lucid picture that is not biased by national doctrine. 5 out of 5 mushroomheads for a book that has brought the reviewer right up to date in naval matters.

ARRSE

The title itself sums up the subject of this beautiful collective work. It details the
marine issues of War in the twenty-first century,
while the US Navy no longer had the means to ensure its supremacy. The book presents not only the different fleets but also large
classes of vessels, aircraft and
the technological developments or those
Staff. In short, a book to recommend
for its wealth and news.
