The ‘ShipCraft’ series provides in-depth information about building and modifying model kits of famous warship types. Lavishly illustrated, each book takes the modeller through a brief history of the subject, highlighting differences between ships and changes in their appearance over their careers. This includes paint schemes and camouflage, featuring colour profiles and highly detailed line drawings and scale plans. The modelling section reviews the strengths and weaknesses of available kits, lists commercial accessory sets for super-detailing of the subjects, and provides hints on modifying and improving the basic kit. This is followed by an extensive photographic gallery of selected high-quality models in a variety of scales, and the book concludes with a section on research references – books, monographs, large-scale plans and relevant websites.

This volume covers the many variations of Royal Navy wartime escort destroyers, both the purpose-built ‘Hunt’ class and the conversions from older fleet destroyers. The ‘Hunts’ were built in four groups (Types I to IV), while the old ‘V&W’ classes were modified to Long Range Escort, Short Range Escort and ‘Wair’ (anti-aircraft) variants. Also included are the fifty ex-US ‘flush-deckers’ that became the ‘Town’ class.

With its unparalleled level of visual information – paint schemes, models, line drawings and photographs – this book is simply the best reference for any modelmaker setting out to build any of these numerous escort types.

The overall visual information in this book ensures that it is a wonderful reference point for any model maker who is passionate about developing this particular line of models. At the same time, for the passing observer who is interested in different types of Destroyers, the book is a helpful point of reference.

I haven’t yet read a Shipcraft book that I did not like, and Brown’s addition to the series is no exception to that trend. Brown clearly knows his stuff and how to write it down even for the less technically knowledgeable reader.

If you are a British naval modeler you will find this book of interest and it is perhaps a good place to start researching your next model.

Nautical Research Journal 67:4 (Winter 2022)

This is another one of these great little paperbacks aimed at the modeller and very nicely done. It is compact, covering Design and Construction, Model products, Modelmakers’ showcase, Colour Schemes, Camouflage, Modifications, Plans & selected References. Containing photographs of both the full-size vessels and the modelling products available this is particularly useful reference material.

This offering from Seaforth Publishing and authored by Les Brown is presented in a style that I appreciate as a modeller. While ships are not something that I build, I could see a book such as this being particularly beneficial.

"Highly Recommended."

The final section of the book is made up of details of known modifications carried out to the ships throughout their lives and a few pages of basic, but helpful, plans of the ships. I think 4.5 anchors are in order for this book. To be fair, it might interest a few who aren’t modellers.

Overall this is another excellent addition to the ShipCraft series. I enjoy building the occasional model warship and have a few destroyers. Not only did I find plenty of inspiration in here but a number of model producers that I wasn't aware of before. There is also a bibliography at the back, which provides plenty of good reference books, along with a list of useful website. Another very nice addition to the series.

This is the first book in the ShipCraft series from Seaforth Publishing that I have read. Wow, I have really enjoyed reading and reviewing this book looking at British Escort Destroyers in the Second World War.

The History Fella

Following on from his Shipcraft 27, Sloops and Frigates, Les Brown has taken on another wide ranging set of ships, the Hunts, Towns, V&Ws and a number of the smaller group of old destroyers that were adapted for escort work.

In just 18 pages he has managed to give a good overview of the design and construction of the ships. Later in the book he covers the subsequent modifications. The text is backed up by excellent and carefully selected photographs.

The range of models and accessories available covers the old out of product ion versions, along with modern 21st century models kits, including 3D printed and card formats.

As usual the real inspiration lies in the wonderful gallery of built models in various scales, the detailed line drawings, colour schemes and superb photographs. Many of the photographs have not been published before and they have been carefully chosen to illustrate the text.

This is another terrific, inexpensive and handy book for anybody wishing to build models of these ships, and also for those who just want quick and easy to read reference book.
