This is something of a treat for enthusiasts who like Bristol/ECW single-deckers, as the 170 or so pictures in 96 pages of an Amberley-style softback book show that many pre and post-war L, LS, MW, SUL, RE and LH types, with many variations, and all against the backdrop of the Dales scenery. The author’s book on the buses of Samuel Ledgard of Leeds is also still available.

Specialist interest maybe, but these buses are depicted in some of Britain’s loveliest scenery.

The author writes a well informed commentary from personal experience. There is a map of routes, histories of each and the vehicles used.
Places featured include Kilnsey, Grassington, Kidstone Pass, Kettlewell and stops between.
Sadly some routes described have been lost. Skipton to Hawes took almost four hours. Do modern buses still go though the arch at Bolton Abbey? Pictures show buses in floods, snow and high summer so scarcely a dull photo here.

Great for bus nostalgics of whom I am happily one.

We have reached volume 8 of the “British Buses” series, and this one covers the West Yorkshire Road Car Company in Wharfdale from the 1950s to 1970s.

The Company’s routes from Skipton and Ilkley up into Wharfedale, Wensleydale and Swaledale are some of the most scenic in Great Britain. The enduring Yorkshire landscape, which has been used for many films and TV programmes, such as Calendar Girls, All Creatures Great and Small and Emmerdale, complements the little-changed street scenes and villages to give a fascinating backdrop to this captivating collection of more than 170 historic bus photographs.

The photographs here encompass the vast open landscapes that attract so many tourists to the area. Here we have mostly rural buses in action, in all types of terrain and weather. Members will be familiar with previous works by the author will recognise the style, with the photos accompanied by detailed captions adding local colour to the facts.
