Plaque unveiling in memory of Pals historian

28th July 2014

A plaque is to be unveiled honouring the memory of the late William 'Bill' Turner – a well known Accrington Pals historian – in recognition of the huge amount of time and effort Mr Turner put into his research about the regiment.

The plaque will be put up in the Richardson Room at Accrington Library, where Mr Turner spent a great deal of time, working to preserve the memory of the Accrington Pals, and carrying out research for his book, Accrington Pals. It will be unveiled on 4 August, marking the 100th anniversary of the start of the Great War.

The author's widow, Mrs Ruth Turner, who is also a member of the Accrington Pals working group, told the Lancashire Telegraph:

'I’m so pleased and proud that Bill’s lifelong work of chronicling the history of the Accrington Pals and recognition for their bravery is to be marked in this way.'
'It’s especially poignant that the plaque is installed on this day and in this year, the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War.'
'Also that it will be in Accrington Library, a place very close to Bill’s heart, as it’s where he spent so much time researching the Pals.'

The unveiling ceremony will be held at 4.15pm on Monday, 4 August. It will be attended by Mrs Turner, along with dignitaries including members of the Accrington Pals Working Group, library staff and the mayor Coun Musif Dad
