I believe there is something for everyone in this book and personally I learned things about some foods of which I was previously unaware. this has made me rethink my diet. As the book covers such a wide spectrum of issues, I think more in depth reading might be needed if you discovered a particular area of interest, but it definitely is a great starting point. Useful and appetising recipes are included in part of the book.

I was interested to read The Food Bible as I've become much more conscious of what I eat in the past couple of years, trying to make sure that my diet is balanced with plenty of fruits and vegetables. The 2019 edition of the Food Bible by Judith Wills offers a comprehensive overview of nutrition and guidelines for healthy eating and balanced diet. The book is a perfect guide for anyone interested in improving their eating habits or losing some weight, whether by incorporating more greens into their diet or swapping unhealthy foods with healthier options.

The book can be easily navigated as it's split into a few sections. The sections I found the most interesting were Food as Medicine and Food for the Time of Your Life which suggests foods suitable for different ages from childhood to later years, including a chapter on pregnancy and breastfeeding. Throughout the book there are beautiful photographs of foods, plants and spices making the reading experience colourful and more fun.

The book also contains numerous healthy recipes ranging from little bites to dinners and desserts. The last section of the book offers a nutritional breakdown of over 300 foods and also advising on the number of calories. This is really useful if you are trying to either lower or increase intake of a particular mineral, vitamin or other nutrition.

A hardback book showing a wonderful variety of fresh fruit and vegetables on the cover.

This book is full of mouth watering recipes, money saving tips, and how to maintain a balanced diet.
It also lists which foods are high in salt and fat content, healing herbs and spices, food as medicine, what each vitamin is good for and which your body can absorb easily, and how to manage weight control.

Proof indeed that you don’t need faddy diets for health. Just eat good food sensibly.

An extremely informative read and a book that I shall refer to for many years to come.

This amazing book is something of an eye opener about food. I learnt more from this book than from all the BBC2 documentaries that have been on during the past decade. Clear, colourful images, charts and tables tell you everything you need to know about the food you’ve been eating and what it is doing to you. Essential reading for just about everyone.

My top six most interesting and important cook books

Then there is The Food Bible, by Judith Wills. The subtitle, I think “the ultimate reference book for food and your health” makes it sound more stodgy than it is. It is in fact a no-nonsense compendium of what is healthy, what makes a balanced diet, food as medicine (including the right diet for diabetics, cancer sufferers, etc. food for weight control, food for different stages of life, food for health and pleasure. She discusses, sensibly and dispassionately, the advantages and difficulties of vegan eating, the truth about processed foods, organics, supplements, diet fads. It really is a go-to book if you want an informed answer about any ingredient or any diet. It’s all there.
