The British Pacific Fleet

“This book can justifiably claim to be the first to demonstrate the real scope and scale of the British Pacific Fleet's impressive achievement. Those who like to read or to study Royal Navy carrier and fleet operations have had to wait a long time for what has every justification to be recognised as the definitive work on the operations of the BPF. The content whilst immense is highly readable. The immediate impression is detailed text, clear concise maps and a great number of photographs. The presentation is impressive, but so is the detail and the accurate research so recorded. It is a highly significant piece of intense research and highly recommended.”

Squadron Leader John Rowland will be signing copies of his book 'Return Flights in War & Peace' at Linghams Bookstore in Hewswall, Wirral at 11.00am on Saturday 10th September.

John Rowland took his first flight with the RAF Volunteer Reserve in 1938. He passed his Cadetship at RAF Cranwell with flying colours and was posted in March 1940. By May Rowland was sent to Calais to aid in creating a diversion for German troops whom were advancing to Dunkirk. The task was to fly three Hectors at each side of Calais, to drop bombs and fire at any sign of threat.

Rowland was posted to The Central Flying School to undertake a flying instructors course. After a lengthy period as an instructor Rowland was sent on a number of flights and went solo in May 1947. After 28 operations he was promoted to Squadron Leader as Flight Commander at 1656 HCU at Lindholme and later posted to 625 Squadron as Flight Commander.

Return Flights in War & Peace offers a fascinating first hand account of Squadron action in WWII through Rowland's insightful memoirs.
