The Life and Fate of Vasily Grossman

John and Carol Garrard gave a talk about their book, 'The Life and Fate of Vasily Grossman' at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington on 3rd June.

They spoke about how the murder of his mother in the massacre of the Jews at Berdichev, Ukraine was the defining moment in Vasily Grossman's adult life. In his masterpiece 'Life & Fate', Grossman does not mention "Berdichev" by name. Nevertheless, in less than a single page, through the eye of a naive victim, he vividly describes it. The archival research of John and Carol has revealed his fictional projection to be based upon historical fact.

John and Carol are donating all of their royalties to the Study Center Vasily Grossman.

On 18 June 1928, Norwegian explorer of polar regions, Roald Amundsen, disappeared without trace when his plane crashed during a search and rescue mission.

A Doctor on the Western Front
Henry Owens’s Great War diary provides a vivid and complete narrative, seen from the perspective of an army doctor, of what it was like to live and fight in the trenches of the Western Front. Owens, a member of the original British Expeditionary Force, the ‘Old Contemptibles’, was among the first British soldiers to set foot in France. He spent the next four years in the front line as a doctor and a diarist, an eyewitness to some of the most bitter and violent struggles of the greatest conflict the world had ever seen.
