A USAF F-111 – MY FAVOURITE PRE-DIGITAL IMAGE’

Following the publication of his book Military Low-Level Flying From F-4 Phantom to F-35 Lightning II, we asked Scott Rathbone which of the aircraft he featured represented the favourite of his pre-digital images. The answer, he states, was that of a USAF F-111 that can be found on page 53. Scott went to explain his choice.

Of the 100 or so pre-digital images in the book provided by Adrian Walker, my favourite has to be the one the General Dynamics F-111F, 72-1448/LN.

Using a manual film camera with manual focus was never going to be easy for low-level photography, but Adrian managed to capture this image to a quality that is comparable to some of the best digital images of recent years. An obvious lack of usable light has resulted in a slower shutter speed, creating a blurred background and a dynamic sense of speed.

Personally, I like images that show squadron markings and this F-111, being the one marked for the commander of the 48th Tactical Fighter Wing, really makes the image stand out even more. Many more historic images like this one are available in the book.’
