"Churchill's morphing character is juxtaposed against the changing world in the post-World War One era, with key events such as the Bolshevik Revolution and subsequent civil war in Russia, upheaval in the Middle East, and rise of Fascism all covered in detail... Harte was born in 1925, he has lived through the many changes brought by the 20th century and there are few as well placed as him to profile Churchill in context. This book is a neat blend of social commentary with the story of a powerful character in his rise to ascendency. A considered study and recommended."

Allan Todd provides a service to the movement in telling the story of Che’s life as well as discussing his legacy, all in a couple of a hundred pages. Che’s example is therefore still relevant today. He was no Stalinist, a copy of Trotsky’s History of the Russian Revolution was found in his knapsack in Bolivia Nothing is possible if we just accept nothing can really change. His love of humanity, his poetry shows us that we are fighting for an infinitely better world. As Ernest Mandel, quoted in the book, said: “Hopes and dreams are … categories of revolutionary Realpolitik.”

"This book is a gem! It is one of the very few accounts to have been written by one of ‘the many’ without whom ‘The Few’ could not have succeeded. The author joined up in late 1941 and was trained as an armourer, initially serving at a gunnery school. However, shortly before D-Day he joined a ‘Free French’ Spitfire squadron with which he served until the end of the war. The second half of this highly readable account is in effect a detailed history of the Free French Spitfire Wing during the last year of the war. That in itself is hugely welcome, but even more so is the description of the itinerant life of a 2nd Tactical Air Force fighter unit in the months after D-Day and the often-miserable conditions endured by the hardworking and ever faithful groundcrew. No less valuable is the earlier description of life for a working-class family in London during the inter-war years. A peach of a book that was unputdownable."

The Spanish Civil War is fascinating in its own right- but also is instructive now that we have another Land War in Europe. ER Hooton, an author on conflict in the 20th Century takes on the Naval campaigns that did have effect on the land war that was central to the struggle. The Fascist Nationalists and the Socialist-then Communist Republicans both tried to conduct naval warfare -with the Nationalists being far more successful. The Nazi Germans and Blackshirt Italians also sent both weapons for the Nationalists- as well as naval forces to help. The French and the British tried to play the Naval Power adults in the room- safeguarding neutral shipping- but were not very successful. Overall, it made sailing anywhere near Spain, or Spain's Atlantic islands a dangerous exercise in the late 1930s. Spain's two coastlines (on either side of Portugal) are quite long- and any traffic coming by sea from Northern Europe to the Mediterranean has to pass lots of it, so this had a big effect on European..
