The Battle of Dunkirk took place during the Second World War between the Allies and Nazi Germany. As part of the Battle of France on the Western Front, the Battle of Dunkirk was the defence and evacuation of British and Allied forces in Europe from 26 May to 4 June 1940.
A truly fascinating book full of lots of information and jaw dropping information. I should say as a former Scout Leader I used to say when taking 20 kids on camp for a week, I used to joke that it was like feeding an army or going on military manoeuvres. Well this book certainly shows how wrong I was, but it many ways it was similar. The sheer quantities is mind blowing and from reading this book you could argue that the men and women doing this side of the war are just as important as those having to do the fighting. The book has a number of photos, charts and diagrams in, the photos are excellent both in black and white and colour, they mainly are of the vehicles of the less exciting vehicles but they are great none the less and are a key to the book. In my opinions this is a fantastic book, very well written and researched and certainly one I would happily recommend. ★★★★★ Read the full review [link=http://ukhistorianbendavidson.co.uk/logistics-in-world-war-two-1939-1945/]here[/link]

I enjoyed the diary entries and reading a WW2 book from someone who isn't American, which is what I usually read. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys personal narratives.

Dunkirk and the epic of a defeat that became a victory has not been dealt with very often in the cinema, even if those times that happened has resulted in excellent films. Among them, a beautiful scene in "Atonement", where Dunkirk serves as a background to a story very different from a war movie, but the evacuation episode was masterfully portrayed in a 1958 film with the great John Mills (and there are some photos of the recreation of the French beaches taken from the film also in the book) and especially in the recent "Dunkirk" by Nolan. However, no cinematic recreation can beat the photos of the real event, with the tragedy of the destroyed and beached ships, the abandoned material and the injured and evacuated troops. However, the most striking photos are those of British soldiers who, although defeated, have a proud and often smiling look. Dunkirk may not have been a victory, but it certainly was the birth of a new spirit that later helped British forces redeem themselves during.. Read more

Nearly 70 years have passed since October 1944 when Dick McCreery became the third and final Commander of the legendary Eighth Army in Italy – in succession to Monty and Oliver Leese. With his outstanding record as a fighting soldier and armoured tactician, it was no surprise to anyone that he was to be hugely successful. McCreery was commissioned… Read more...
Very few British soldiers could lay claim to such a full war as Leslie Young. Having survived the retreat to and evacuation from Dunkirk, he volunteered for the newly formed Commandos and took part in their first major operation, the raid on the Lofoten Islands. He fought and was captured in Tunisia. He escaped in Italy before his PoW camp at Fontanellato… Read more...
