What a great change to read a book about a politician that hasn’t been done to death. Chuter Ede was very much a hidden personality in the Labour government of the 40’s but a man who achieved a lot but was overshadowed by other political personalities of the time. Like all political books about leading personalities, this book is pretty much detailed and comprehensive in its telling and details, pretty much covering his whole career. This book looks at various things Chuter Ede worked on and achieved through his career such as working as part of Labour and with Liberals, ending capital punishment, the new NHS Health System, education and his role as Home Secretary. Although I had heard and read about him before this book is very comprehensive in its detail, which turns it into a very informative volume. I really enjoyed this book which is very well written by the author Stephen Hart who writes in a very concise and detailed way. For any up and coming political students into politics,.. Read more

A great book with interesting stories. The author does an amazing job of presenting each story. The stories have great details and background of the events. It was extremely hard to put down. A must read for those who enjoy true stories of the sea disasters.

This is a great little book to help you learn about the Army at this time and will be a good jumping off point into further researched. I can see this book being well read by Re-enactors and Wargammers alike.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars I first became familiar with Isabella Bird when I read her "Unbeaten Tracks" while living in Japan as an expat. Although I lamented the fact that the writing of her travels within the country predated her photography, I was captivated by the way she was able to paint a picture through her precise descriptions of her adventures and discoveries. I had no idea of how far, wide and fearlessly Bird had traveled and was thrilled to learn more about her in the pages of this book. Author Jacki Hill-Murphy gives readers this well-researched biography - that reads like a thriller - of Bird told through mostly through her correspondence and writings. The explorer's utter restlessness and thirst for adventure is palpable through the book and the descriptions of Bird's harrowing travels left me astonished and eager to do further research on her as well as read her other writings. I can see this book appealing to a wide range of curious readers and am eagerly awaiting.. Read more

... overall, it is a good addition to railway histories using sources other rail historians could usefully follow.
