Pen & Sword's new wargaming books will offer original sets of rules and supporting scenario books across a wide range of periods, plus more general books on various aspects of the hobby, such as modelling, painting miniatures and making terrain. They are commissioned and written by wargamers for wargamers. Whether you are a veteran gamer or a new recruit to this fun, fascinating and increasingly popular hobby, there is sure to be something here for you.
This is a great book for anyone that is starting ancients period wargaming and needs help to get going with painting figures. This is the bit I struggle with big time, but this book is giving me the confidence to give it another go.

Medieval Sword School
Each build is well described and every step illustrated with photos of the builds in progress. All have a listing of the resources used in each build, some excellent examples of scratch building. These are not only cheaper than buying fully finished buildings but it will give more originality to your collection and of course, the fun of making your own. Another excellent book for wargamers and modellers.

The book is then rounded off by considering how you base your completed figures, and again with a good variety of different ground types. To close, there is a handy Appendix which lists the various manufacturers as well as details of all the figures and materials featured in the book.
Another excellent addition to the series, and as someone who has only recently got into building 'Ancient' figures (rather than Napoleonic or WW2) I found this a really handy and informative guide.

The text is extremely readable, almost conversational, and will probably end up being dipped into rather than read cover to cover. Some of the makers stories have the authors personal reminiscences included. Many manufacturers, large and small** are covered in the text, with all the well known names amongst the lesser known. All sizes are covered including wargame figures and large scale plastic kits such as those from Airfix and Aurora. Even the terracotta warriors get a mention in passing... I can really recommend that anyone who enjoys toy/model soldier history should get a copy for their shelves.

Steam, Steel and Torpedoes
Master terrain modeller Paul Davies takes the reader through the process of creating a visually appealing yet practical terrain system. First the techniques of making the basic landscape are explained, then a series of projects show how this can be adapted to suit different periods or geographic locations (eg European farmland or Sudanese desert). There are then detailed chapters on adding vegetation, buildings, roadways, trench systems etc. The clear, step-by-step instructions are clearly illustrated by numerous specially-taken photographs of the work in progress and Paul's inspirational finished pieces.

One-hour Wargames
One of the biggest problems facing wargamers is finding the time to actually play. Most commercially available sets of rules require several hours to set up and play to a conclusion; some can easily swallow up a whole day or weekend. For many gamers this means that their lavishly prepared miniature armies rarely get used at all. Apart from time, the… Read more...
