Rating: 5 out of 5 stars Alexander the Great, a Battle for Truth and Fiction is a layman accessible and interesting monograph on the analysis and evaluation of historical sources, specifically sources detailing the history surrounding Alexander the Great written by David Grant. Due out 30th April 2022 from Pen & Sword, it's 336 pages and will be available in hardcover format. Alexander the Great and his generals and ancient Macedonian history are perennially popular subjects and always fascinating to revisit. Recent political and media "truthfulness" should have left every one of us more jaded and cynical about their objectivity. How much more so are accounts of ancient history, sometimes written centuries after the fact by people who had a distinct desire to present a biased view (unconsciously or with conscious inclination)? The author, who is a specialist in the subject, takes on the task of evaluating sources and attempts to tease the actual facts out of the historical hyperbole... Read more

This book pretty much does what it says on the tin: compares the careers and capabilities of two of the most famous military commanders of the ancient world.
And it does that very well. First the author provides extensive data on the world into which each man was born and their lives and achievements, including an analysis of some of their most famous victories...
I particularly enjoyed some of the insights into how the physics of phalanx warfare actually worked.
With this background in place, they compare the two men on seven criteria - explaining both why they chose those criteria and how Alexander and Caesar compare - before making their final judgement. I won't spoil which man gets the nod - that's the whole point of reading this, after all!
Recommended if you have an interest in ancient history.

For anyone interested in the not-so-recent past this new book from Richmond resident and historian David Grant is well worth a look. In The Last Will and Testament of Alexander the Great, the author, by way of previously untapped forensic evidence, offers a fresh take on what happened following Alexander's demise and how his will (or possible lack of one) and the machinations of those closest to him, changed the Graeco-Persian world forever.

A fascinating and incredibly readable account of the incredible sweeping field campaigns of one of history's greatest generals and leaders, while I'm sure you know a lot about the man himself, this book goes into detail about his military campaigns and numerous triumphs which usually don't get as much attention.
While some information you will have definitely heard of before, there are some new insights and information found here that makes it a worthy read for any fan of military history, or anyone looking to dip their toes in the water. While the book does give great detail into tactics and strategies it does so in a way that is readable and understandable for even the newest fans of military history.
