The author Stephen Wynn set himself an unenviable task of selecting ten of the most notable VC recipients of WW2, from a total of 182 that were awarded. His wide cross-section of recipients covered the major military branches of the services as well as the often unappreciated bravery of the Colonial forces.
I enjoyed his historical background tales of the VC from its inception during the Crimean War through to the present day. The various stories of immense bravery are incredible, Each exceptionally heroic act making a powerful difference to the ultimate outcome of their specific battle. or mission.
I thoroughly recommend this book to the lovers of military history.

It truly beggars belief that petty politics and outdated tradition prevented the outstanding persons mentioned in this wonderful book from receiving the honour and award they were due, hopefully this mindset no longer holds sway in the upper echelons that make these decisions, read this book it is superb.

There are a couple of sets of archive photos included and the level of detail within the text, especially with the individual stories of pilots and aircrew and their experiences which make good reading, and for many of them, what I think is an appropriate memorial to the sacrifice that many of them made in their dedication to get their cargo delivered. If you have an interest in Market Garden, then I think this is one you should read.

The memoirs of the children give a detailed insight into their lives during the First World War. I found some of the stories so sad... This book gives a different view of what war was like on both sides, and would make a good addition to any book collection.

This is a fascinating look at the two neighbouring hamlets of Barking and Dagenham in Essex, bt now considered to be part of outer London. My Mum was born and raised in Dagenham and would have loved to read this book, which is why I ased for a review copy. Like the book about Liverpool's women, this book celebrates the great and the good of Barking and Dagenham and looks at the impact on the two inseparable locations of the first world war. Beautifully written and illustrated, this is a great slice of social history.

Herbert Columbine VC
'Save Yourselves, I'll carry on'. These were the last known words of Herbert Columbine, shouted at his two companions on the afternoon of 22nd March 1918. At 9am that morning, in Hervilly Woods, France, 9 Squadron Machine Gun Corps had come under intense attack from a heavy force of German infantry. Private Columbine took command of an isolated gun,… Read more...

Valour in the Trenches
Alfred Pollard joined the Honourable Artillery Company at Armoury House in the City of London in 1914 aged 21. The HAC is a unique Territorial unit composed entirely of middle class volunteers, who recruit all their officers from the ranks. Pollard was a natural soldier who believed himself (correctly as it turned out) to be invulnerable. He revelled… Read more...
