This is the latest in Matthew Wharmby’s series on the various London bus types, and is similar in style and content. There is comprehensive text covering the history of the type, followed by full details of the introduction changes and final demise. It is copiously illustrated throughout. The period covered was one where much of the variety of liveries was largely supercede by overall; red, but it is interesting to see that even with this restriction variety did survive.

Copiously illustrated with over 270 photographs, virtually all of which are being published for the first time, this is the story of London Buses over sixteen tumultuous years. To give greater context to the narrative, annual vehicle acquisition listings show how purchasing policy changed over the period; important route changes, tendering gains and losses and a fleet list for the entire period are also included. There are also interesting maps showing the changes in bus garages in the period. It’s a well produced quality book, which will sit well on the shelves of anyone interested in the buses of our capital city.

This photographic volume looks at the relatively new London Overground system, its origins and changes since its inception in 2007. The book is arranged into chapters covering each Overground route. Well reproduced photographs accompany a brief summary of each route’s history. As expected Class 378 units dominate the photos at a variety of locations on each of the Overground lines. As well as Class 378, the photos also feature LUL 1972 and S7 Stock, as well as LO Classes 172, 313, 315, 317, 350, 375, 390, 455, 456 and the newest units to appear, the Class 710s. An interesting facet is that some of the routes feature freight traffic, with Classes 37, 66, 86, 90 appearing in the photos. Photos of the infrastructure also feature throughout the book. This is a well laid out general overview of this interesting system. Recommended for those interested in the more recent London urban rail scene.

If you have never visited the London Underground this is the perfect book to know it and if you have already visited it it will help you to see it from another point of view. It is such a complete photographic tour of the "Tube" that it even includes a curious section of the singers of the Metro.
