CLIVE HOLDEN is a military, and defence heritage historian, researcher, and author. He has written six previous books on the military history and heritage of the County of Kent, where he has lived for the last 58 years. He has also produced research papers for the Kent Archaeological Society on the defences of Maidstone and Chatham in the Second World War and is the current Chair of the society’s Kent Defence Research Group. Since retiring from the international meat trade in 2016, he has devoted more time to his many historical interests and is a regular volunteer with the National Trust, being involved with research work at Chartwell, and archaeology projects at Knole House, Bodiam Castle, Smallhythe Place, and the White Cliffs at Dover, assisting at the latter with the recent excavation of the site’s many Second World War defences that had laid buried for almost 60 years.
