Joni Mitchell, Chords of Inquiry is not just another biography—it’s a lyrical, investigative journey into the mind and music of one of the most influential and enigmatic artists of our time. While countless writers have chronicled Joni Mitchell’s life through the lens of fame, romance, or scandal, this book takes a radically different approach: it listens.

Drawing from six decades of interviews, lyrics, public statements, and archival context, Chords of Inquiry weaves together Mitchell’s own words to construct a narrative that is as complex, poetic, and fiercely honest as the artist herself. Rather than retelling her life in neat chapters, the book mirrors the rhythm of her creative evolution—unfolding like a Joni Mitchell album: rich with contradiction, beauty, heartbreak, and defiance.

Through meticulous research and immersive storytelling, the book places Joni’s personal journey within the larger cultural and political movements that shaped her, offering new insight into how she both influenced and resisted the times she lived through. From the windswept prairies of Saskatchewan to the smoky coffeehouses of Toronto and the rebellion of Laurel Canyon, this is the first biography that attempts to understand not just what Joni Mitchell did, but how she felt.

No sensationalism. No filters. Just Joni—through her chords, her poetry, and the lens she gave us all along.

It’s a well-researched analysis of her career and her personal relationships. I was a big fan of some of her boyfriends, including Graham Nash James Taylor and Jackson Browne, so I especially enjoyed the story of the song, “Our House.” Joni Mitchell’s biography is really like reading a potted history of the era with so many other stars apoearing in it, such as Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, and the protest movements relating to major events of the time. I haven’t listened to many of Joni Mitchell’s songs and the book covers them in great detail so I’ll have to go through them and play them when I have time.

Exactly five decades on from first listening to Hejira on a 33” and damn near wearing out the needle, Joni Mitchell’s music still resonates.
This book has only deepened the ‘conversation’ I’ve been having with her work all along.
It’s meticulously researched and a worthy tribute to an artist without equal.

Over the years I’ve listened to some of Joni Mitchell’s music, particularly after hearing Both Sides Now )which I absolutely love) in the film Love Actually. Since then I’ve slowly realised that I knew more Joni Mitchell songs than I first thought. So I was really pleased to receive a copy of Chords of Enquiry by Yamily Habib from the publisher and to have the opportunity to read more about her life and music.

This is a very detailed and balanced biography that explores Joni’s inner life, struggles, and resilience. She emerges as a complex character, and the book helped me better understand the different eras of her music and how she became the artist she is today.

I found the sections about her early life particularly interesting; her resilience after contracting polio, her relationship with her parents, and the formative experiences that shaped her.

The book follows her journey from performing in coffee houses in Toronto during the 1960s, crafting her own repertoire of songs while drawing on the influences around her, through to becoming an internationally recognised artist.

Habib also provides insight into the wider musical world of the time, including Joni’s interactions with other musicians and the cultural environment in which her work developed. The contrast between the pressures and turbulence in her personal life and the success of her music career is explored thoughtfully.

I also appreciated the analysis of her songwriting and musical approach, which highlights her originality and mastery as a songwriter. The later chapters, including her reception in the 1980s during a changing musical landscape shaped by MTV and shifting industry trends, were particularly interesting. Overall, I learned a lot from this book and would recommend it to anyone interested in Joni Mitchell’s life, music, and the evolution of her artistry.

Unlike most biographical books I really got the sense of Joni Mitchell herself shining out. I cannot say enough good things about this book. It was an informative pleasure to read.

As a Joni fan, I have read many books but this offering by Yamily Habib stands apart from the rest.
The author unfolds Joni’s story through her creativity; her lyrics, her statements, her reflections.
For me, each chapter is like an album track. Each chapter listens, reveals, unfolds and captivates.
Highly recommended.

What an amazing biography. You don’t need to be a Joni Mitchell fan to enjoy this book. It stands out because it’s a journey in itself; through Joni’s life as seen by her music, lyrics, interviews and events. I’ve listened to her music for well over 50 years. I find her enigmatic. Her chords and tuning are singular and her lyrics stand the test of time as poetry. I haven’t read any other biographies about her, but I feel I have a slightly better understanding of her as a person. She has evolved over the decades and for me, the stand out moment was her appearance at Newport in 2022. Resplendent but frail, it seemed impossible that she would perform. But she did, and then some. Her recovery was truly incredible and it’s difficult to understand the willpower required to learn to play etc all over again. It took great courage. I’ve really enjoyed sharing this journey and more than that, it gives fresh insight into so many of her lyrics. I’ll be spinning a number if albums in the coming weeks with a fresh view. A remarkable lady and this peek at her soul is rewarding. Loads of photos at the end of the book along with an extensive bibliography and source references, so there’s more reading for anyone interested.

Joni Mitchell is a legend of music history who has written hundreds of songs, poems, and more during her life. Here, Habib writes Mitchell’s biography in her own words by pulling from decades of Mitchell’s writing, as well as interviews and performances.

Yamily Habib does not set out to make a definitive recollection of Mitchell’s entire life. Instead her goal is to give the reader a peek into what Mitchell’s motivations, artistic style, and atmosphere surrounding her life are in order to let the reader make their own assumptions on Mitchell. Habib balances Joni’s duality as both a muse and an artist, working to unpack how one influences the other.

This is a favorite type of biography of mine, one not too hung up on details and chronology. Instead, this is a character portrait that is not trying to imbue salacious details into a relatively quiet and introspective life. It’s relatively brief, clocking in at 200 pages, which I think is a lovely length for someone like myself who is not a hardcore fan but would just like to get a feeling for the artist behind the music.

Anyone who grew up listening to Joni Mitchell or who has just discovered her, will love this book! The author’s attention to Joni’s musical changes over the years is well documented! One would have had to live in a cave to have not listened to her many musical changes. Her song writing output is tremendous. Her dedication to her craft is wonderfully expressed in this charming book. Highly recommended!
