This classic work is a distillation of the knowledge, intuition and wisdom of one of history’s greatest military commanders.

Napoleon’s success was built upon practical experience combined with his own study of classical warfare and his natural grasp of the key principles of war. His thoughts and theories on the art of waging war are presented here in the form of accessible and readable maxims.

This edition also features additional contextual commentary by historians David Chandler and Beatrice Heuser, which allows modern readers to compare Napoleon’s principles with the experience of war today.

About Philip Haythornthwaite

Philip Haythornthwaite is one of the most distinguished and prolific writers on the military history of the Napoleonic era. His many previous books include: The Peninsular War: The Complete Companion to the Iberian Campaigns 1807-14, The Armies of Wellington and Waterloo Men: The Experience of Battle, 16-18 June 1815.

‘In 1811, twelve young men were chosen among the families in the Emperor’s personal service to serve as ushers in his apartments. My mother, attached to the household of the King of Rome as first nurse to the prince, requested this favour for me from the grand chamberlain, the Count de Montesquiou, and it was granted.’ Louis-Joseph Marchand’s intimate memoir of his time as Napoleon’s valet is the last of the significant Napoleonic manuscripts to be translated into English and a unique and precious insight into the last days of Napoleon’s Imperial project.
