Norm Mort graduated from the University of Toronto and became a public school teacher, librarian and art instructor. At the same time, his lifelong interest in cars resulted in the publication of his first article in Enjoying MG in 1985. From that point on, he wrote freelance articles for newspapers, magazines and club publications until taking early retirement from teaching in 2003. Norm then became a full-time freelance automotive journalist and author living in the small village of Wellington in eastern Ontario, Canada. He was a member of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) for over 20 years and was a member of the Canadian Car of the Year committee for three years.
All in all, Norm has written about classic, antique, special interest, hot rod, custom and sports cars for over 35 years, having stories published in Canada, the US and Britain. He was an automotive section writer and columnist for the Montreal Gazette and a columnist and feature writer for seven years with Sun Media. For Sun Media, he wrote two columns a week on old cars and collecting, as well as on car design and new vehicle road tests.
He currently freelances for numerous other publications and specializes in collector cars, automotive history, automotive product reviews, road tests, and book reviews. He was one of the first columnists for Canada’s Old Autos newspaper in which he has 15 different columns. He was also a regular contributor to the US-based Sports Car Market and Collector Car Market magazine for Keith Martin.
In books, he was a contributor in Keith Martin’s Guide to Car Collecting and Keith Martin on Collecting Austin-Healey, MG and Triumph, as well as and others. In 2007, Crabtree Publications published Norm’s first young teen’s book Classic Cars 1930-1980. Norm also acted as a consultant for Crabtree on other car titles. He went on to write Micro Trucks (Veloce Publishing) in October, 2008, followed by Anglo-American Cars from the 1930s to the 1970s, Triumph Stag: The Essential Buyer’s Guide, American Trucks of the 1950s, American Trucks of the 1960s, American ½-ton Pickup Trucks of the 1950s, American ½-ton Pickup Trucks of the 1960s, American Woodies, American Station Wagons, American Independents 1945-1960, Chevrolet Impala 1958-1970, Buick Riviera 1963-1973 and Chevrolet ½-ton Pickup Trucks 1973-1987.
Norm Mort is also a government registered and approved appraiser who also owns CIA Car Appraisals, which has provided insurance evaluations on collectible vehicles in Ontario and Quebec for 30 years.
