Lieutenant Colonel RICHARD BURKLUND graduated from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1983 and earned his doctorate from the University of Glasgow, UK in 2022. During his military career he held a variety of command and staff positions in light infantry, military intelligence, and joint special operations forces. He served in combat operations in Panama during Operation Just Cause; with Task Force Dagger, the Joint Special Operations Task Force in combat in Afghanistan, during Operation Enduring Freedom, and at the Combined Forces Special Operations Command during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He retired from the Army in 2004 and continued to serve as a high-ranking Department of Defense civilian and defense consultant until 2021. He has studied the martial arts of Japan for over 50 years, and holds black belt grades in judo and jujutsu.
