Would you swig a magic potion or plot to kill your husband in order to marry your lover? These are just two of the many romantic and sexual customs from British history that you will explore as eight authors take us through the centuries, revealing that truth is stranger than fiction when it comes to love. From bizarre trivia about courtly love, to techniques and prostitution, you’ll encounter memorable nuggets of provocative information that you'll want to share.

It's all here: ménage a trois, chastity belts, Tudor fallacies, royal love and infidelity, marriage contracts (which were more like business arrangements), brothels, kept women, and whorehouses. Take a peek at what really happened between the sheets. Each story provides you with shocking detail about what was at the heart of romance throughout British history.

Sexuality and Its Impact on History: The British Stripped Bare chronicles the pleasures and perils of the flesh, sharing secrets from the days of the Anglo-Saxons, medieval courtly love traditions, diabolical Tudor escapades—including those of Anne Boleyn and Mary Queen of Scots—the Regency, and down to the ‘prudish’ Victorian Era. This scholarly yet accessible study brings to light the myriad varieties of British sexual mores.

A great addition to the knowledge of women’s lives in history!

★★★★★ Each chapter teases facts from fiction, challenging source materials and evaluating narratives to offer retrospective understanding of British History through the lens of sex, love, marriage and the pivotal consequences of those involved. It travels through time, ending with Victorian London and cleverly brings us almost back full circle to Chapter 1 with the legacy of Lady Godiva and the perception of sex workers. Sex work is currently another hot topic of contentious political debate in contemporary Britain, and much of the debate can find its roots in these histories. Not only does Sexuality and Its Impact on History offer us insight to our past, it offers possible keys to how to progress today with our modern problems with sex, sexuality and morality – even if it is what *not* to do.

★★★★★ History was never interested me but I had to read the new Hunter S. Jones book. The concept of bringing an all female team of writers together to tell the stories of British sexuality is appealing. Each chapter gives us a sneaky peek at how sexuality influenced society & culture. This is a real page turner that I had to finish. The chapters are all very well written and researched, and this is a fascinating way to better understand the past. Emma Haddon-Wright's essay on Lady Godiva begins the book and fits perfectly with Ms. Jones ending story on the impact of Victorian prostitution. Well done ladies. This is a must read for anyone curious about history, sexuality, Royals, Tudors & Victoriana.

★★★★★ A great read. I romped through it.

Learnt about Anglo Saxon noblewoman Lady Godiva one of only three English names to be recorded in The Domesday Book.

A newly crowned Anglo Saxon King found in bed shortly after his Coronation with his young wife and her mother.

The medieval Art of Courtly Love and the thoughts on contraception and abortion therein.
The twists and turns in the fate of Royal women in Tudor and Stuart England and Scotland, in one case dangerous love poetry.

The laws that have changed women's rights to succession and the implications caused throughout history.

And finally the not so prudish Victorians and their double standards. Three amazing women who courted and loved by royalty and rich men around the world.
