After careers as an officer in the Australian army and then as a teacher and educational administrator, Tony McArthur gained a PhD in Ancient History from the University of Sydney in 2009 and his thesis forms the basis of this book. He has been a volunteer member of the New South Wales and ACT rural fire services since 1993. Now semi-retired he has time for writing and the pursuit of his academic interests.
