Warfare in the Medieval World explores how civilizations and cultures made war on the battlefields of the Near East and Europe in the period between the fall of Rome and the introduction of reliable gunpowder weapons during the Thirty Years' War. Through an exploration of thirtythree selected battles, military historian Brian Todd Carey surveys the changing tactical relationships between the four weapon systems – heavy and light infantry and heavy and light cavalry – focusing on the evolution of shock and missile combat.

Through the use of dozens of multiphase tactical maps, this fascinating introduction to the art of war during western civilization's medieval period pulls together the primary and secondary sources and creates a powerful historical narrative. The result is a synthetic work that will be essential reading for students and armchair military historians alike.

I found this book highly educational and I will be dipping in and out again for sure.

The Battle narrative is very well supported by detailed battle maps. This feature in itself is a huge benefit for wargammers looking to recreate and relive these battles.

Anyone that has an interest in this period needs to have this book on their bookcase.

Medieval Sword School, Jason Hulott

The book is a useful as an overview of the evolution of warfare over some 1200 years.

The Richardian volume XXIII

Professor Carey carries his “Archer Jones”-inspired matrix analysis of combat into the Middle Ages. Good coverage of Byzantine tactics and the early Middle Ages. The Mongols and the Reconquista in Spain are welcome additions to the high Middle Ages. Separate treatments of light and heavy infantry in the late Middle Ages. Important chapter on the “military revolution” of the early modern era. Excellent diagrams and maps. Glossary and select bibliography

Steven D. Fratt, Oxford Bibliographies

Brian Todd Carey's Warfare in the Medieval World explores how civilizations and cultures made war in the period between the fall of Rome and the start of the Thirty Years War. This was a period when warfare became sophisticated, with strategies including shock and missile tactics and involving approaches still used today. Tactical maps chart history while the introduction to the era uses primary and secondary sources to reconstruct military history. A strong pick for military history collections
