The period covered in this book is one of the most famed and glorious for the British Army and the infantry were its backbone. Gabriele Esposito examines how the foot regiments were reformed and evolved to absorb the lessons of defeat in America and setbacks elsewhere to become the efficient and dependable bedrock of victory in the Napoleonic Wars. He details the uniforms, equipment and weapons of the infantry, along with their organization and tactics. Chapters are devoted to the Guards, the line regiments of foot, the Light Infantry and Rifles as well as Highland and Lowland Scots regiments.

The author considers not only those units serving with Wellington in the Peninsular War and Waterloo Campaign, but all British infantry units, including those in Canada, the West Indies, India and elsewhere, not forgetting even the home defence Fencibles. Foreign units serving with the British army, most notably the King's German Legion, are also included. The work is lavishly illustrated with colour artwork.

A magnificent job.

This isn’t an in-depth look at the British Army from this period, but it is a good jumping off point for more detailed research. It does provide some excellent information for some of the more obscure units serving in the army, which may appeal to a wargamer looking to add some unusual flavour to their army.

It does provide some good resources for painting miniatures, which is always useful. Would I recommend this book, yes to anyone starting out in this period, as it’s a great starting point? I’m not sure someone already well exposed to this period in military history will find it very useful, its probably an interesting read but I wouldn’t rush out to purchase if you already have a well-stocked bookshelf of similar books.

Personally, I found it to be a very good read, and got me thinking about building some of the more obscure units, especially for skirmish gaming.

Irregular magazine, Issue 16 Volume 2 / Summer 2021 - review by Jason Hubbard

The book is an attractive volume, it provides a good overview of the British army.

Gareth Glover, The Waterloo Association

"The book has many illustrations".

Dr John Morewood, Friends of the Waterloo Committee Ass

"Novices will come for the introductory information. Grognards will stay for the obscure units."

The Historical Miniatures Gaming Society

Regular readers will be familiar with Gabriele's organisation features for The Armourer, and that's essentially what this book is, with a look at the make up of Wellington's Light Infantry. It's not just the organisation though, there's also uniforms, weapons, equipment and tactics. The Guards, line regiments, Light Infantry and Rifles and Scottish Regiments are covered, not just in the Peninsular War and Waterloo campaigns, but also in Canada, West Indies and India. With excellent quality paper, it's a solid look at Wellington's men.

The Armourer July 2021

"The images produced are large and in full colour and do enhance the book... Overall, the book is an attractive volume, it provides a good overview of the British army."

The Napoleon Series

The book is a great introduction to British infantry forces, as well as a great compendium for identifying all of the numerous small units that were recruited at the time.

The Napoleonic Guide

As many a good military book it begins with the Foot Guards and then moves on to us lesser mortals. As well as the mainstream it looks at contemporary British units in Canada , the West Indies ,Africa , India and Australia. There is a chapter covering The King’s German Legion and other foreign troops in British Service.

Clash of Steel

A nicely presented book and one which I think many painters of wargame figurines will thoroughly enjoy, as well as those who enjoy re-enactments. Useful detail, plenty of colour references and even better for tackling not only the uniforms of the units in Europe at the time of Wellington, but which also remembers that the British Army of the time still had commitments in plenty of other countries around the world.

Military Model Scene, Robin Buckland

This is a great little book to help you learn about the Army at this time and will be a good jumping off point into further researched. I can see this book being well read by Re-enactors and Wargammers alike.

Medieval Sword School

A concise but welcome summary of the British foot regiments of the period. The images are well selected and the book considers service in locations and regions beyond the Napoleonic European theatre.

About Gabriele Esposito

Gabriele Esposito is an Italian researcher and a long-time student of military history, whose interests and expertise range widely over various periods. Most of his recent studies have been dedicated to the reconstruction of the organization, functioning and tactics of the armies across history; in each of his publications there is always some relevant space dedicated to the 'material culture'of the various armies taken into account and - more in particular - to the empirical science known as 'uniformology'. Gabriele is the author of numerous books on armies and uniforms and is a regular contributor to many specialized magazines in Italy, France, Netherlands and UK. His many previous works include Armies of Early Colonial North America 1607-1713Armies of the Late Roman Empire 284-476Armies of the Hellenistic States 323 BC to AD30Armies of Celtic Europe 700 BC-AD 106Armies of Ancient Greece, circa 500 BC to 338 BC; and The Macedonian Army of Philip II and Alexander the Great 359-323 BC, all published by Pen & Sword since 2018. He lives in southern Italy, near the ancient battlefield of Beneventum.

The British Army of George II, 1727-1760 (Hardback)

Gabriele Esposito provides a detailed overview of the history, organization and uniforms of the British military forces during the long reign of George II (1727-1760). Perhaps best known for the Jacobite Rebellion, this period saw the British military forces greatly expanded and involved in two major international conflicts: the War of the Austrian Succession and the Seven Years’ War. The latter was truly a global war, subsuming the French and Indian wars fought in the Americas, as well as conflicts in India and elsewhere. By 1760, despite achieving little in Europe, Great Britain had been able…
