About Seaforth Publishing

Seaforth Publishing is a leading maritime book publisher run by the long-established editorial team of Robert Gardiner and Julian Mannering, who share a passion for ships and the sea and have between them more than fifty years of commissioning experience first building the Conway Maritime Press list in the 1980s and '90s and later setting up Chatham Publishing.

The aim of the list is to produce the very best maritime books, whether they be narrative histories, definitive reference works, ship monographs or modeling books; and as well as reflecting the very latest research they are also designed and printed to the highest standards. Some have made significant contributions to the field, but we hope that all of them will make worthwhile additions to any collector's bookshelf.

What we publish

We specialise in books on most historical maritime themes, ranging from ship design to life at sea, in varied formats from highly illustrated technical reference books to reprints of classic narratives. Subjects include ship design and development, naval and mercantile history and biography, nautical archaeology, exploration, and ship modelling.

We do not publish practical books on yachting and sailing as a sport (except its historical aspects), nor textbooks for professional seafarers; neither do we ever publish the personal memoirs of seamen.

Prospective authors

Seaforth is always looking for good books, and any author (or prospective author) with a suitable work is invited to submit a proposal.

A good proposal should be a framework for your book and if it is well received by us, and by reviewers that we may use, you may expect a similarly good reception for the finished book. When you are writing a proposal you should attempt to include and cover the following:

We are a small, dedicated publisher and our aim is to build fruitful and long-term relationships with our authors – If you wish to talk through your ideas before putting together a formal proposal, or have any queries on the publishing process, please do not hesitate to contact us at any time.

We look forward to hearing from you.
