Roald Amundsen arrives at the South Pole

14th December 1911

One of the greatest figures in the history of polar exploration was Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen (1872-1928). Amundsen left Norway for Antarctica in June 1910 and became the first person to reach the South Pole on 14 December 1911.
