The river Aisne flows east to west through its namesake region until it reaches the river Oise. During the First World War it also gave its name to three separate battles: an Anglo-French counter-offensive following the Battle of the Marne in 1914; a key battle of the Nievelle Offensive in 1917; and Operation Blucher during the German Spring Offensive of 1918.
This is another one of the excellent Battlefield Guides which are published by Pen and Sword, this time covering a WW1 battlefield that holds an important place in the story of the French Army in particular during WW1. It is an excellent mix of giving the historical context of what went on in this region. Located about 100Km away from Paris, to the North East of the city, it was a stopping point for the initial German assault at the start of the war, and the line of the road, the Chemin des Dames, which became part of the front line essentially for the rest of the war. It was in 1917, with a huge French offensive that failed to make significant advances yet at great loss of life that brought about mutiny among French soldiers, not because of the war or defending their homeland, but for the huge loss of life over a quite insignificant area of ground. As well as giving the history, it is all mixed in with some suggested tours you can take of the battlefield. Some of it can be done by car,.. Read more

The maps are clear and instructive, the presentation is enthusiastic and assured. There is also the important assistance that comes from former soldiers with an eye for the terrain which shapes the progress and outcome of land battles. Another splendid DVD.

Very useful for research and reference as well as being what I like to call a 'good read'.

War History Online
The author's narrative is clear, easy to read and engaging...the stories, quotes and anecdotes bring life to the proceedings and reveal weaknesses in British structure, tactics and command. There are a number of simple and clear maps to help navigate what for some readers will be new territory (which, by the way, is well worth a visit) and a good selection of photographs by way of illustration. Well worth a read.

Battle on the Aisne 1914
The River Aisne featured prominently in August 1914 during the Retreat from Mons. A month later it was the scene of further desperate action when the British Expeditionary Force re-crossed it in their unsuccessful attempt to dislodge the German Army entrenched along the crest of the slopes on its northern bank. Having already fought three major engagements… Read more...
