JOHN FISHER enlisted into the Army in Derby in 1943. His wartime service, as this book reveals, saw him battle his away across northern Europe, from the beaches of Normandy, into the heart of the Third Reich. After demobilization from the Army, John worked in rose growing and had several bread-and-butter jobs – in a foundry, as a postman, and on the factory floor making chocolate at Cadbury Bros., Bournville. During this period, and perhaps as a result of some of his experiences, an inner prompting gradually steered John towards an involvement with the Church. He was eventually accepted for training at Lichfield Theological College and ordained as a priest in the Church of England, serving for some years in the industrial Midlands before finally moving to the West Country. He retired to Wells, though he always remained at heart a Sharpshooter until his death.
