The First World War as a living history is to all intents and purposes over. As of February 2009 there were only two veterans from six million alive who served on the Western Front. Richard has spent the last 20 years interviewing and carefully recording the memories of over 270 veterans and this book is a culmination of his 20 years of work.

One of the most profound books I have ever read -- it brought me to tears several times. Highly readable and engrossing, I read the book in about four evenings, and could not wait to return to it each day after work. It provides as a good a texture of the war and its conditions as one could ever hope for. Anyone who has an interest in The Great War, or the nature of combat would do well to read it.

About Richard Van Emden
Richard van Emden has interviewed over 270 veterans of the Great War and has written widely on the 1914-18 conflict.Previous books include Britain's Last Tommies, Boy Soldiers of the Great War, All Quiet on the Home Front, Prisoners of the Kaiser and the top five best-selling The Trench. He has visited the Somme and Ypres every year since 1985 and has an expert knowledge of the First World War battlefields.
He currently lives in London.
