The word 'pirate' conjures up images of the swashbuckling men featured in the likes of Black Sails and Pirates of the Caribbean, but the world of piracy has a centuries-long history that is filled with little-known women who wielded real power in a man's world long before they were able to even vote in democratic elections.
Their stories are compelling and encompass women of all ethnicities and cultures. From Sayyida al Hurra, Queen of the Barbary Pirates, a muslim woman who successfully preyed on the shipping of her enemies and became governor of Tétouan, to Zhèng Shì, an outlawed Tanka woman born in a brothel who rose to successfully command seventeen thousand men in the Red Flag fleet, which at the time outrivaled the Imperial Chinese Navy.
During the Golden Age of Caribbean Piracy, many transgendered women joined pirate crews even though the presence of a woman aboard ship meant death. Their stories have largely been ignored by history but A History of Women in Piracy uncovers the lives and loves of these daring women who flaunted convention and proved themselves to be every bit as capable (or more so) as their male brethren.

As someone who has always been fascinated with pirates I enjoyed learning more about women in the history of Piracy and there was indeed more than I thought that there would be.

Women pirates! What a fascinating subject. And the women in these pages aren't fictional characters but real women who made their way in a dangerous world even being better than their male counterparts (at least some of the time). This is a good introduction not only to the pirates of the Golden Age of Piracy in the Caribbean but throughout the world and even centuries earlier.
Altogether Gregory explores the lives of 10 women pirates, and their stories are blood-curling, fascinating and soaked in the personal and historical circumstances they found themselves in. They lived by a moral compass that was far outside the bounds of the law. And we can only imagine beyond the facts presented in this captivating book, wondering at the personalities of these women who chose the routes of these salt-encrusted lives.

A well rounded and succinct account of women in piracy. I had great fun reading this and would definitely pick up a physical copy.
I enjoyed reading and learning about some of the most famous female pirates. I have always had an interest in pirates and female pirates wasn’t a topic I knew much about. The book explores a little about the lives of these women and their lives at sea. The appendix was helpful and encourages further research.

I learned so much while being thoroughly entertained. It didn’t read like a textbook, but I surely would take a class on this. I can’t wait to whip these fun facts out at parties and work, lol.

This is a wonderful overview of the history of women in piracy. Each woman gets several pages dedicated to them, definitely enough for you to gain an understanding of each one. This also helps you determine if there are any particular people or topics you want to look into further.
Definitely would recommend!
A diverse history of the many women that were granted the title of pirate. I appreciate Gregory’s insight teaching the difference between pirates and buccaneers. Furthermore, learning the complexities of female pirates and why they were extraordinary for their time. There are snippets of historical context for each pirate we are introduced to. I appreciate the location and various aliases associated with the women.

I really, really loved reading this. As a woman who loves pirates, this was a perfect and entertaining read. Personally, my favourite was the chapter about "Jacquotte Delahaye, Real or Phantom?". It was a wonderful read.

A series of short stories and biographies about the most famous female pirates, this book is an amazing read. You can very easily see that this one has been well researched and written in snack-sized sections to allow for a brief eye view into the lives of these trailblazing women. As educational as it is entertaining, you will find yourself envisioning Geena Davis from Cutthroat Island with a higher level of respect and knowledge for that a female pirate was not a myth - but rather - real.
For anyone who loves pirate lore and all things of the Golden Age of Piracy, I highly recommend this one.
