The text is of course supported by a host of images featuring archive photos from the time, alongside many modern comparisons. Add copies of various reports and other original documents this is just packed with interest. General Maczek was determined that Ypres should not be destroyed by war for a second time, and he was able to achieve that aim, much to the relief of the Belgian civilian population. The story coupled with the many photos, which all have helpful captioning, will make a useful reference if you want to visit Ypres, and look beyond the story of WW1 to better understand the WW2 story of the town. I have no hesitation in recommending this one.

The whole story is heavily illustrated, and the photos, both archive and modern comparisons, all have comprehensive captions which add even more details for the story, plus helpful maps. The archive photos show some great detail on the early panzers, as well as a few unusual pictures of some Guy Quad gun tractors, knocked out and abandoned. A fascinating story and I have long been a fan of the Then & Now format of these books from After the Battle Publications. If you are holidaying in Greece, this gives a great guide for places to visit, and to retrace this story of a small part of the war in 1941.

Plenty of diagrams from that survey are included. While a few of those old bunkers have been demolished since the war, many have not, and there are some great photos of many of them today, both inside and out. Once again, and especially with the extra detail that has been added since that original article, this is another of the modern series of Then & Now books from After the Battle which I think will be very popular, and which will also be handy to have with you if you plan to visit the area yourself.

As well as plenty of inspiration for modellers, it can also give inspiration to those wishing to visit either of these French ports and to be able to visit some of these key sites for themselves.
