‘Flight Through the Ages’ was the title of the first annual exhibition of the Guild of Aviation Artists in 1971. This book celebrates 50 years of exhibitions and includes paintings by some one hundred Guild artists, past and present, depicting aircraft from the earliest airborne activities through to the present day. There are balloons and airships, fighters and bombers from both world wars, including Spitfires and Lancasters, airliners from the early years of air travel through Concorde and on to the present day. There are also gliders and helicopters and the current generation of advanced aircraft among some 200 illustrations, most in full colour.

Artists include some of the most well-known British artists of their day and the works display imagination and creativity in a variety of different styles and treatments that bring flying machines to life. There are historical scenes and aircraft in their natural environment, showing action and some of the aviators and others from the world of aviation. There is a short history of the Guild and a step-by-step guide to one artist’s approach to the subject.

...if you have an interest in aviation art in general or are an amateur or professional artist, this book is well worth the price.

Over the Front, Spring 2020

While the World War I section makes up a small portion of the works included, if you have an interest in aviation art in general or are an amateur or professional artist, this book is well worth the price. Flight Through the Ages is highly recommended.

Miniaturas JM

A beautifully produced book in A4 landscape with an image per page in full colour that celebrates the history of flight through the eyes of Guild of Aviation Artists in joint celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Guild. The collection of images is outstanding and demonstrates the creative advantages of painting over photography. This is a book that will appeal to a very wide audience. – Most Highly Recommended.

The assembled art works are of an extraordinarily high quality perfectly capturing there subject matter at hand. The assembled images vary in medium, but they range from the optimism and romance of the aviation pioneers; the opulence of pre and post war civilian air travel, the brutality of air warfare in the first and second world wars, culminating in Museums, Gliding and selected self-portraits.

It would seem like an impossible challenge to pick ‘favourites’. However, there were three art works which I found particularly powerful, these being: Replacements; Co-operation, and A Complex Subject. Replacements perfectly captures the spirit of a frontline Royal Flying Corps squadron and the contradictory mass of vulnerability; mechanisation, and pre-war chivalry. Co-operation is a stark portrait of medical assistance during World War 2 between the RAF and USAAF, and A Complex Subject which is the perfect rendering of life as a present day student at No 1 School of Technical Training at RAF Cosford.

This book is highly recommended and it truly is a joy to behold.

Flying in Ireland

Sumptuous new book celebrating 50 years of the exhibitions and paintings of the Guild of Aviation Artists.

RAF News

This is a lovely celebration of the Guild in all it’s glory. While not strictly a military book, it is, nevertheless, a joy from cover to cover. The book covers the period from the Great War to the modern era with diversions into air shows and some of the personalities of the Guild.

There are more than enough military themed paintings to delight and inspire. If you like this sort of stuff you will be in clover.

War History Online, Mark Barnes

I really enjoyed this book and I have to say that the majority of the images are stunning – and you would think that they are photographs, they are so detailed and full of power and raw emotion, they give the images life.

I really liked the way that the book was set out with the different chapters showcasing the different ears and types of flying machines through to the birth if flight, the Great War and World War II and today’s jet planes and commercial flights. There are plenty of images in the book for all to enjoy.

It is 5 stars from me for this book, it was thoroughly enjoyable and it is one that I will treasure, it is a lovely tribute – very highly recommended!

What you can do thanks to this beautifully presented collection in this new book, is have your own private viewings whenever you wish. Lots for the aviation enthusiast and plenty of inspiration for modellers, starting with the Stirlings 'Bombing-up' on the cover. Excellent.
