This is the story of how Grosz paintings disappeared. Some turned up over the years and, in 1952, Grosz discovered one of his paintings in the famed Museum of Modern Art in New York. It was sold to the MOMA for $850 and the seller claimed that he had inherited it from Grosz' dealer. Provenance research now concludes that this was not true. Similar stories about Grosz's work are recounted around the world.

In 1959, Grosz returned to Berlin, depressed, prone to anxiety and nightmares and died after one of his drinking binges. Grosz and his astonishing paintings and art is one of the tragedies of the 20th century.
