Clifford Ellis (1907-1985) was teaching at Regent Street Polytechnic in London when he met Rosemary Collinson.

After their marriage in 1931, they designed posters and book jackets together. Their imagery was strongly

influenced by the British countryside and the creatures that inhabit it. Signing their work ‘C&RE’, they also

shared a love of fresh bright colour and bold design.

After moving to Bath in 1936, Rosemary taught art at the Royal High School, whilst Clifford became Assistant at

the Technical College but was soon promoted to Head of the Bath School of Art.

During the war the Ellises continued their teaching and design work. Clifford painted watercolours of Bath’s cast

iron railings for the Recording Britain project, as well as views of bomb-damaged buildings in Bath and VE Day

celebrations. The first eminent artist he enrolled as a teacher was Walter Sickert.

With the return of peace Ellis founded a residential academy where students were trained to become art

teachers, taught by leading modern British artists. Lacking premises, he struck a deal with Lord Methuen who

had space to spare at Corsham Court, a stately home ten miles from Bath. Clifford was Principal of Bath Academy

of Art from 1946-72, ably supported by Rosemary.
