Jean Dangler traces shifts in conceptions of alterity from medieval to early modern Spain through a detailed study of four writing genres: muwashshah/jarcha poems from Al-Andalus, Andalusi "cutting poems", medical literature about the body and discourse about the monster. They reveal how attitudes towards the other become increasingly stratified and hierarchical during this period.
