Malcolm Batten is the son of Reg Batten, who was a well known railway and transport photographer, who lived in East London all his life and took photographs of local railways, transport and also extensive views of country scenes throughout the Home Counties and beyond.

The author spent his working life as a librarian, but has always had a great interest in his fathers' work and also in the history of transport, being a bus and railway photographer himself.

He is involved with the Epping Ongar Railway, where he arranges exhibitions for the railway about local and national railway history with colleague and neighbour Geoff Silcock.
