The medieval city of Novgorod is located at the northen end of the Baltic-Black Sea and is one of the most intensively studied and well preserved medieval urban sites in northern Europe. These eighteen papers derive from a symposium held at the Fifth EAA meeting held at Bournemouth University in 1999 and highlight many of the fascinating aspects of Novgorod which are made available to a much wider audience by this publication. Many of the papers are the product of Russian-West European collaborations and they focus on subjects such as the early history of the city, its buildings, wood technologies, craft production (pottery, antler, bone, ivory, jewellery), radiocarbon dating, the domestic economy, the environment and diet reconstruction. The excellent preservation conditions in the area meant that evidence from the site opened up rare opportunities for the investigation of certain aspects of medieval urban life. 136p, 4p col pls, b/w figs and pls, tbs (British Museum Occasional Paper 141, 2001)
