Often overshadowed by larger, more iconic tanks of the Second World War, the LT vz. 35—later reclassified by the Germans as the Pz.Kpfw. 35(t)—was a surprisingly effective and influential machine. Designed by the Škoda company, this Czechoslovak light tank combined mobility, mechanical innovation, and dependable performance to become a key armoured asset during the early Blitzkrieg campaigns in Poland and France. Though it lacked heavy armour and firepower compared to later war machines, its adaptability and reliability in varied terrains earned it respect on the battlefield.
This monograph offers a comprehensive look at the LT vz. 35’s development, combat deployment, and technical evolution. From its origins as a symbol of interwar Czechoslovak military ingenuity to its widespread use by German, Slovak, Bulgarian, and Romanian forces, it sheds new light on a vehicle that quietly helped shape early tank warfare. Combining technical detail, operational history, and rarely seen images, Panzer 35(t) is an essential read for anyone interested in armoured warfare, overlooked machines of the Second World War, or the legacy of Central European military engineering.

Škoda was one of a number of companies working in the manufacturing plants of Czechoslovakia to produce advanced armaments in the late 1930’s. The race to modernise the weaponry of the Czech nation was intense, and the rest of the world was well aware of the excellent designs which were emerging and being offered for export. The Nazi German state took over the Czech nation, and immediately began to use the best tanks and guns for their own use. The LT vz.35 was a very capable tank and was taken into the Wehrmacht as the PzKpfw 35(t), although not considered to be as good as their own Panzer III. These tanks played a prominent role in the invasions of France, Balkans and Russia. Other nations used the tanks, sometimes with minor variations, and these included Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. This book from Fonthill is incredibly detailed within its 260 pages, and covers the development of Škoda’s tank, its technical details, and its operational use in each army that employed it. The book includes details of markings and camouflage, and there are superb photographs throughout. This book is extremely well written and very clear, giving all the important information that modellers and researchers would want to see. This is a very useful account of this significant tank, which is perhaps less famous than the ‘Panzers’ but actually formed the mainstay of several German units until the last vehicles were lost in around 1942.
